"Coming To Terms With...": Missing Indian Student's Parents Break Down

The parents of Indian student Sudiksha Konanki, who went missing from a beach in the Dominican Republic on March 6, have said in an emotional announcement that they are coming to terms with the fact that she has drowned.

In a video, Ms Konanki's father Subbarayudu can be seen fighting back tears as he says that authorities "on both sides", presumably from the US and the Dominican Republic, have told them that the waves were very high at the time of the incident and that the person of interest in the case, 22-year-old Joshua Riibe, was not a suspect.

With his wife, Sreedevi, sobbing beside him, Mr Konanki says, "Both sides of the authorities have shown us how high the ocean waves were at the time of the incident and both sides of the authorities have clarified that the person of interest was not a suspect from the beginning."

Wiping away a tear from his eye, he continues speaking but gets only as far as "It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart..." when his wife cups her face with her hands, sobbing louder, and turns away from the camera. Mr Konanki comforts her and pulls her towards him before saying, "...and a heavy heart that we are coming to terms with the fact that our daughter has drowned. This is incredibly difficult for us to process. We kindly ask you to keep our daughters in your prayers."

CNN has reported that the Konankis have asked for their daughter to be declared dead to "seek closure".

Ms Konanki, 20, a citizen of India and a permanent resident of the United States, studied at the University of Pittsburgh. She went to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic with five friends on March 3.

Footage from March 5 shows her drinking at the bar of a hotel called Riu Republica before going to the beach with a group of people, including Riibe.

Ms Konanki was seen entering the beach at 4.15 am and all of her friends had returned by 5 am. Riibe, an Iowa resident and student at St Clou State University in Minnesota, told authorities that he had tried to rescue her after they were dragged in by a wave and she got tired of swimming

Riibe's passport was confiscated by authorities in the Dominican Republic and he was interviewed for six hours, but he is not considered a suspect.

The request for the student being declared dead "supports the wishes of Ms Konanki's grieving parents to seek closure in their request that the Dominican law enforcement authorities acknowledge the death of their daughter by accidental drowning," the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office in Virginia, where Ms Konanki's family lives, told CNN.

Israel Minister Threatens To Annex Parts Of Gaza Unless Hamas Frees Hostages

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz threatened Friday to annex parts of the Gaza Strip unless Hamas militants release the remaining Israeli hostages held in the war-battered Palestinian territory.

The warning came as Israel stepped up the renewed assault it launched on Tuesday, shattering the relative calm that had reigned in the war-battered territory since a January 19 ceasefire.

Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli strikes killed 11 people on Friday -- three in pre-dawn strikes and eight more during the daytime.

On Thursday, it reported a death count of 504 since the bombardment resumed, one of the highest since the war began more than 17 months ago with Hamas's attack on Israel.

"I ordered (the army) to seize more territory in Gaza... The more Hamas refuses to free the hostages, the more territory it will lose, which will be annexed by Israel," Katz said in a statement.

Should Hamas not comply, Katz also threatened "to expand buffer zones around Gaza to protect Israeli civilian population areas and soldiers by implementing a permanent Israeli occupation of the area".

The military urged residents of the Al-Salatin, Al-Karama and Al-Awda areas of southern Gaza to evacuate their homes on Friday ahead of a threatened strike.

"For your safety, head south toward the known shelters immediately," Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee said in a post on X.

AFP images from northern Gaza showed donkey carts piled high with belongings as residents fled their homes along rubble-strewn roads.

- 'Pressure points' -

Israel resumed intensive bombing of Gaza on Tuesday, citing deadlock in indirect negotiations on next steps in the truce after its first stage expired early this month.

Its resumption of large-scale military operations was coordinated with US President Donald Trump's administration but drew widespread condemnation.

Turkey condemned what it said was a "deliberate" attack by Israel on a Turkish-built hospital in Gaza. "We strongly condemn the destruction by Israel of the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital," its foreign ministry said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed "concern" over the fresh Israeli assault in a telephone call Friday with the ruler of Qatar, one of the mediators of the January ceasefire.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed concern about the government's actions in a video statement on Thursday, saying it was "unthinkable to resume fighting while still pursuing the sacred mission of bringing our hostages home".

Thousands of protesters have rallied in Jerusalem in recent days, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of resuming military operations without regard for the safety of the hostages.

Of the 251 hostages seized during Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack, 58 are still held by Gaza militants, including 34 the Israeli military says are dead.

The Israeli military said on Thursday that it had closed off the territory's main north-south route as it expanded the ground operations which resumed on Wednesday.

- Projectiles from Gaza -

Israel's military said it intercepted two projectiles fired from northern Gaza on Friday after air raid sirens sounded in the southern city of Ashkelon.

On Thursday, sirens went off in central Israel as Hamas said it fired rockets at Tel Aviv in its first military response to Israel's resumed offensive. The military said it intercepted one rocket, while two hit an uninhabited area.

"We will intensify the fight with aerial, naval and ground shelling as well as by expanding the ground operation until hostages are freed and Hamas is defeated, using all military and civilian pressure points," Katz said.

He said these included implementing Trump's proposal for the United States to redevelop Gaza as a Mediterranean resort after the relocation of its Palestinian inhabitants to other Arab countries.

When asked if Trump was trying to get a Gaza ceasefire back on track Thursday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that the president "fully supports" Israel's renewed Gaza operations.

Israel rejected negotiations for a promised second stage of the truce, calling instead for the return of all of its remaining hostages under an extended first stage.

That would have meant delaying talks on a lasting ceasefire, and was rejected by Hamas as an attempt to renegotiate the original deal.

Rushikonda Project Symbolises Growth, Not Extravagance: Senior YSRCP Leader

Senior YSRCP leader G Amarnath on Thursday said the Rushikonda project was a crucial step in enhancing Visakhapatnam's infrastructure.

He was referring to the controversial palatial mansion built on Rushikonda Hill in Vizag, which replaced tourism villas during the previous YSRCP regime.

Dismissing allegations against the project, G Amarnath stated that the accusations were "politically motivated and misleading".

"The project secured all necessary clearances, occupies only three per cent of the land, includes significant replanting efforts consistent with the site's historical use since the 1980s, and stands as a symbol of sustainable growth, not extravagance," he said in a press release.

G Amarnath dismissed claims that former CM Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy planned to use the Rushikonda project as a "personal residence" stating that they were "completely false".

He added that Mr Reddy never lived there and that the facility was intended for public and government use.

He further stated that the project cost Rs 230 crore, not Rs 500 crore as alleged, and occupied only three per cent of its 61-acre site, with the remaining area developed with roads, drainage, and extensive greenery.

According to him, Rushikonda had been under development since the 1980s, "with outdated structures being replaced." He asserted that the project, which includes a five-star hotel and a conference hall, was approved by multiple authorities and was scaled down from seven to four blocks after judicial review.

G Amarnath further emphasised that the project aligns with YSRCP's three-capital policy, strengthening Visakhapatnam as the executive capital.

Infiltration Attempts Go Up In J&K, Agencies Crackdown On Overground Workers

A surge in infiltration attempts by heavily armed terrorists along the International Border in Jammu sector has become a major cause of concern for New Delhi, prompting a crackdown on overground workers aiding them.

Agencies operating in Jammu and Kashmir say that more than four dozen terrorists have managed to sneak into India and set up their bases in the upper reaches of the Pir Panjal range over the past year.

Inputs shared among intelligence agencies suggest that the number of foreign terrorists affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed has gone up by five times compared to local terrorists.

Figures from the Ministry of Home Affairs reveal that around 120 terrorists are active in J&K, of which only about 20 are locals and the rest are foreign-trained terrorists who have snuck in.

Last month, a heavily armed group of terrorists had opened fire at a Jammu and Kashmir Rifles patrol vehicle in the Sunderbani area of Rajouri district. An investigation has revealed that a group of terrorists that had freshly infiltrated into J&K was responsible for the attack. The group is still being tracked.

Inputs being shared by various agencies with the local police indicate that infiltration attempts will rise in the coming months and this issue was discussed during a review meeting chaired by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan earlier this month. Mr Mohan, who was on his first visit to Jammu, was tasked by Home Minister Amit Shah with reviewing the ongoing audit being done by forces that guard the border in the region.

Following the review, the National Investigating Agency (NIA) conducted raids on Wednesday in 12 locations in Jammu, including the premises of alleged terrorist sympathisers.

"Among the premises which were raided include the homes of overground workers (OGWs) linked to the newly-formed offshoots and affiliates of banned terrorist organisations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM)," the NIA said in a statement.

The agency said it was acting on information regarding the infiltration of LeT and JeM terrorists into India through the International Border and Line of Control. Intel reports suggested that the infiltration was facilitated by OGWs and terror associates living in border areas.

Besides providing logistical support, food, shelter and money, the suspects were involved in guiding the terrorists through the difficult terrain of Jammu province to ensure their safe passage, the NIA said.

The terrorists were then believed to have made their way to the hinterland districts of Kathua, Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar, Reasi, Rajouri, Poonch, and also to the Kashmir valley, it added.

Spain Court Rejects Father's Bid To Stop Daughter's Euthanasia

A Spanish court on Monday said it had rejected an appeal by a father who tried to stop his young paraplegic daughter's euthanasia in an unprecedented legal battle.

The 24-year-old woman was due to undergo the procedure in August last year after the euthanasia board in the northeastern Catalonia region supported her request.

The process was suspended at the last minute after her father filed a legal objection with the backing of conservative campaign group Abogados Cristianos ("Christian Lawyers").

The father argued that his daughter suffered from mental disorders that "could affect her ability to make a free and conscious decision" as required by law.

He also said there were indications his daughter had changed her mind and that her ailment did not entail "unbearable physical or psychological suffering".

But in a ruling dated Friday and made public on Monday, a Barcelona court said the woman met the conditions for euthanasia, which was legalised in the European country in 2021.

"All the professionals who have intervened in the process agree that... she suffers a serious, chronic and disabling illness, without any contradictory tests having been performed," the judge wrote.

The woman's ability to decide on this "most personal" of rights was "proven", meaning the father cannot challenge it, the judge added in her ruling.

Abogados Cristianos said they would appeal the verdict, alleging "irregularities" committed by those who authorised the euthanasia that would cause "the nullity of the entire procedure".

Campaign group Right to Die with Dignity celebrated a decision that, it said, "reaffirms the importance of respecting the will and independence of people in the final stage of their lives, without undue interference".

The woman, who became paraplegic after throwing herself from the fifth floor of a building in a 2022 suicide attempt, asked a court in April of last year to allow her to exercise her right to die.

Her case was the first in Spain to reach a court for a judge to decide since the 2021 euthanasia law was passed.

Indian Railways In Sound Financial Condition, Covid Losses Recovered: Ashwini Vaishnaw

Indian Railways' financials are in good condition with continuous improvement efforts underway, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

During a debate on the working of the Railways Ministry, Mr Vaishnaw noted that the national transporter has overcome Covid-related challenges and recovered the losses, with passengers returning to train travel and both passenger and cargo traffic showing growth.

During 2023-24, Indian Railways reported a revenue of approximately Rs 2.78 lakh crore against expenses of Rs 2.75 lakh crore. Major expenditure components include staff costs (Rs 1.16 lakh crore), pension payments (Rs 66,000 crore), energy expenses (Rs 32,000 crore), and financing costs (Rs 25,000 crore).

"Railways is fulfilling its expenses from its own income because of good performance. ...Overall, the financial condition is good and we are trying to improve it on constant basis," Mr Vaishnaw stated.

The minister highlighted that Railways subsidises passenger fares while generating revenue from cargo and freight operations.

While the actual cost per kilometer stands at Rs 1.38, passengers are charged only 73 paise, resulting in a total passenger subsidy of approximately Rs 57,000 crore for 2023-24.

Mr Vaishnaw emphasised that Indian train fares remain the lowest compared to neighbouring countries.

"If you look at a journey of 350 km, Rs 121 is the fare of general class in India, Rs 400 in Pakistan, Rs 413 in Sri Lanka. This is the same in almost all categories," he noted, adding that fares have remained unchanged since 2020.

In spite of the rise in fuel prices, wage costs due to implementation of Seventh Pay commission, we have not hiked the fares since 2020 and have tried to offset it with cargo income, he said.

"The financial condition of Railways is more or less recovered since the COVID-19 slump," Mr Vaishnaw said.

Energy costs have "stabilized" at Rs 30,000-32,000 crore, with the railways financially benefiting from electrification initiatives implemented after 2019.

The minister also outlined several achievements, including increased passenger and cargo traffic.

By March 31 this year, Indian Railways is projected to rank among the world's top three countries in cargo carrying capacity at 1.6 billion tonnes, behind only China and the United States.

Other notable accomplishments include replacement of about 50,000 km of tracks, construction of more than 12,000 underpasses and flyovers, rebuilding of 14,000 bridges, and manufacturing of 41,000 Linke-Hofmann-Busch coaches (LHC).

"In the third term, Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches will be replaced with LHC coaches," Mr Vaishnaw added.

The minister said that this year 1,400 locomotives are being produced in India, which is more than the combined production of America and Europe. This is a big achievement. Also, about 2 lakh new wagons have been added to the entire fleet of Indian Railways.

Indian railway passenger coaches are being sent to Mozambique, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, while locomotives are being exported to Mozambique, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Today, the under-frame of the bogie is being exported to the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, France, Australia and other countries. The important part of the power train, propulsion, is being exported to France, Mexico, Germany, Spain, Romania and Italy.

Mr Vaishnaw said there is a laser-sharp focus on railway safety. Many technical changes have been made. Longer rails, electronic interlocking, level-crossing gates, fog safety devices and 'Kavach' are being rolled out rapidly. Now more work is being done than ever before and the results of which are visible.

In 2025, the railway will also achieve Scope 1 Net Zero. The target of Scope 2 is by 2030, he said, adding that the amount of carbon dioxide emitted and the work done by the railway to benefit the environment will be completely offset.

HAL Loses Rs 55 Lakh After Payment For Fighter Jet Parts To 'Fake' Company

The email was fake, but the money was real. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited or HAL lost $63,000 or Rs 55 lakh to cyber fraud.

HAL Kanpur's Additional General Manager, Ashok Kumar Singh, filed a police complaint on March 13. The police have registered a case under the IT Act as the company fell victim to an online scam.

In May 2024, HAL sought a price quotation for three fighter aircraft parts from a US-based company. The company responded and then they carried the conversation over mail. Somewhere along the way, a fake email entered the conversation.

"HAL got in touch with a US company, PS Engineering Incorporated, to buy aircraft parts. When the talks began there was a legitimate email ID. Somewhere in the middle, the proper email was replaced with a fake one. There was only one difference between the two IDs: the missing letter 'e'," said DCP crime Anjali Vishwakarma.

"Due to this mistake being overlooked, HAL made the payment in a wrong account which was not the account of the proper vendor. When the vendor said that he did not receive any payment, then this fraud came into limelight. In this, HAL has paid approximately $63,000 i.e. Rs 55 lakh in a fraud account," said the police officer.

The police officer further said that it is not clear if another US-based company defrauded HAL or if it was an Indian entity.

Manipur's 5-Day Yaoshang (Holi) Begins, Celebrations Muted This Year Too

Manipur's Meitei community began their five-day celebration of Yaoshang, or Holi as it is known in the state, with the burning of straw huts built at the Shri Govindaji temple complex and a few other areas. Yaoshang is one of the biggest festivals of Manipur's Meitei community.

Due to the ethnic hostilities, the festival of colours has been restricted to religious and community sports activities associated with the carnival.

A gathering of people marked the occasion in the Mantripukhri area, where festivities kicked off with traditional rituals and music. Due to law and order issues, no amusement and entertainment events, including cultural dances, were not organised by civil society groups.

A Meitei priest said besides the ethnic violence, thousands of people displaced from their homes and villages and staying in relief camps since May 2023 are unable to organise festival-related events.

Manipur is famous for its varied sports and cultural activities. Holi here is not celebrated only by playing with colours, but by organising sporting events across the state.

During Manipur's unique Holi (Yaoshang), local clubs and communities organise sports meets in different parts of the state, setting the stage for an action-packed and joyful festival. But all these are being done in a low key due to the circumstances.

The sports meet feature a wide range of games including full marathons, half marathons, athletics, football matches, and indoor games.

Participants range from young children to senior citizens, creating a lively and competitive atmosphere. During Yaoshang, children walk from door-to-door in their neighbourhood, give blessings to adults, and in return, they receive money.

Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh also made his first public appearance after his resignation on February 9 to greet people on Yaoshang.

"Heartiest greetings to the people of Manipur on the joyous occasion of Yaoshang. This festival of colours and harmony symbolises unity, joy, and the rich cultural heritage of our state. May the celebrations bring happiness, good health, and prosperity to all. Wishing everyone a safe and blessed Yaoshang," he said in a post on X.

Mr Singh took part in the celebrations, lighting the traditional Holi pyre, a significant event that symbolises the onset of the festival in the state.

'Very Disappointing' If Russia Rejects Ukraine Peace Plan: Trump

US President Donald Trump on Thursday said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had made "a very promising statement" on a possible Ukraine ceasefire, but added that "it wasn't complete."

Trump's comments came after Putin said he backed the idea of a 30-day ceasefire but had serious questions about it that he wanted to discuss with his US counterpart.

"He put out a very promising statement but it wasn't complete," Trump, who was meeting NATO chief Mark Rutte at the White House, told reporters when asked about Putin's remarks.

"I'd love to meet with him or talk to him. But we have to get it (a ceasefire deal) over with fast."

Trump, whose special envoy Steve Witkoff arrived in Moscow on Thursday for talks on Ukraine, added that it would be "a very disappointing moment for the world" if Russia rejects the peace plan.

"A lot of the details of a final agreement have actually been discussed. Now we're going to see if Russia is there and, if not, it will be a very disappointing moment for the world," Trump said.

Trump also gave a glimpse of the negotiations for a longer-term peace after any ceasefire, including what territory Ukraine would have to give up to Russia.

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

"We have not been working in the dark. We've been discussing with Ukraine land and pieces of land that would be kept and lost," he said.

He added that there was also "a very big power plant involved -- who's going to get the power plant?"

Trump did not name the give any specifics but the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, currently held by Russia, is on the front lines of the fighting. It is Europe's largest nuclear power station.

Negotiations were complex because they were effectively "creating the edge of a country," Trump added.

Ukraine agreed to a US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire at talks in Saudi Arabia this week, bowing to pressure after a showdown between Trump and President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office on February 28.

Tejashwi Yadav Calls Nitish Kumar 'Unfit' To Govern, Demands Resignation

Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, demanding his immediate resignation over alleged insulting behaviour towards women and erratic actions in the Bihar Assembly and Council.

"We now feel pity for Nitish Kumar. His repeated speeches and actions in the House clearly show he is not normal. For the sake of Bihar, he should resign on his own," the RJD leader said.

"We even pray for his health, as his behaviour raises serious concerns. He is unconscious and it is hard to understand how he is running the government," Mr Yadav stated.

He accused Nitish Kumar of insulting women. "He continuously makes inappropriate gestures in the House. We are getting the video footage from the Assembly to prove it. He even pointed towards a woman leader of his own party some time ago," he alleged.

"He should resign and open an ashram to take rest," Mr Yadav said.

The Bihar Legislative Council witnessed high drama on Wednesday as former Chief Minister Rabri Devi, along with opposition leaders, staged a walkout and protest against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Soon after, Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav joined the protest and launched a scathing attack on Nitish Kumar, demanding his resignation.

Reacting to Nitish Kumar's claim that he removed Tejashwi Yadav from the post of Deputy Chief Minister, he stated, "He (Nitish Kumar) repeatedly says he removed people, but the truth is, he himself resigned. He keeps attacking my father, Lalu Prasad Yadav, but Lalu Prasad was an MP and MLA long before Nitish even entered politics. I have also made Nitish sit on the CM's chair twice."

On the ongoing political discourse about Holi and Ramzan celebrations, Tejashwi took a unifying stance: "Everyone should celebrate their festivals together, and no one should have any problem with it."

The JD(U) is yet to officially respond, but party insiders call the opposition's protest a desperate election gimmick. The RJD and its allies are pushing the narrative that Nitish Kumar is incapable of governing Bihar any longer.
