Founder Of Mango Clothing Chain Dies In Accident

Isak Andic, the founder of Spanish clothing retailer Mango, one of Europe's largest fashion groups, with nearly 2,800 stores worldwide, died Saturday in an accident, the company said.

"It is with deep regret that we announce the unexpected death of Isak Andic, our non-executive chairman and founder of Mango," the Barcelona-based company's CEO, Toni Ruiz, said in a statement.

"Isak has been an example for all of us. He dedicated his life to Mango, leaving an indelible mark thanks to his strategic vision, his inspiring leadership and his unwavering commitment to values that he himself imbued in our company," he added.

The company did not provide further details about the accident. Spanish media said the 71-year-old died after falling while hiking with several members of his family near Barcelona.

Mango traces its origins to 1984, when Andic, who is of Turkish origin, opened his first shop on the Paseo de Gracia, Barcelona's famous shopping street, with the help of his older brother Nahman.

It was hugely successful. Spain had just emerged from a decades-long dictatorship that ended with the death of General Francisco Franco in 1975, and consumers were hungry for more modern clothes.

Mango has consolidated its position as one of the leading international fashion groups, with a major presence in more than 120 markets and 15,500 employees worldwide, according to its website.

"Kumbh Mela Is A Grand Yajna Of Unity, Where All Forms Of...": PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that Kumbh Mela is a grand yajna of unity, where the distinction of castes disappears.

Addressing a Mahakumbh Programme, PM Modi said,"The Kumbh Mela is a grand yajna of unity, where all forms of discrimination are offered as a sacrifice. Here, every Indian who takes a dip in the Sangam presents an extraordinary picture of "One India, Great India." Here, saints, ascetics, sages, scholars, and common people all come together, immersing themselves in the confluence of the three rivers. The distinction of castes disappears here, and the clash of communities is erased," he said.

PM Modi also said that organizing Mahakumbh next year will establish the cultural, and spiritual identity of the country at a new height.

"I congratulate the workers and sanitation workers who are working day and night to make Maha Kumbh a success. A new history is being created on this land of Prayagraj. Organizing Maha Kumbh next year will establish the cultural, spiritual identity of the country at a new height. I say it with great confidence, I say it with great devotion. If I have to describe this Maha Kumbh in one sentence, then I would say that this will be such a Maha Yagya of unity that will be discussed all over the world. I wish all of you for the grand and divine success of this event," PM Modi said.

Prime Minister Modi said that events like Maha Kumbh send a positive message to every corner of the country and society.

"I believe that Maha Kumbh is a Maha Yagya of unity...When there were no modern means of communication, then events like Kumbh had prepared the basis for big social changes. Such events send a positive message to every corner of the country and the society," he said.

PM Modi also criticized the previous Congress government for its lack of attachment to Indian culture and negligence towards Kumbh and other religious pilgrimages.

"The previous governments did not give attention to Kumbh and religious pilgrimages. Devotees kept suffering in such events, but the governments of that time did not care about it. The reason for this was that they did not have any attachment to Indian culture. But today, the government in the center and the state respects Indian culture. Therefore, the double engine government considers its responsibility to provide facilities to the devotees coming to Kumbh," he said.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Modi offered prayers at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, seeking blessings for the successful organization of the upcoming Maha Kumbh, set to take place from January 13 to February 26.

PM Modi performed the 'aarti' of the Triveni--the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers--praying for global welfare and harmony. The rituals were conducted by 'Tirth Purohits' amidst the resonant chanting of Vedic mantras. He also offered Akshat, Chandan, Roli, flowers, and traditional clothing at the Triveni as part of the ceremony.

Before the rituals, PM Modi sought the blessings of prominent saints. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Governor Anandiben Patel accompanied the Prime Minister during the event.

India's Light Tank Successfully Completes High-Altitude Firing Trials

India's indigenous light tank has achieved a "major milestone" by firing a number of rounds at different ranges at an altitude of more than 4,200 metres with consistent accuracy, the defence ministry said on Thursday.

The highly versatile 25-tonne class Indian Light Tank (ILT) has been developed to boost the Army's combat capabilities along the frontier with China.

The latest trial of the tank followed the phase-one trial in the desert environment in September.

"The Indian Light Tank has achieved a major milestone by firing a number of rounds at different ranges at an altitude of more than 4200 m, at a high altitude location with consistently accurate results," the ministry said.

The Indian Army is looking at deploying over 350 light tanks, mostly in the mountainous border areas.

The development of the light tank is seen to be aimed at countering China's deployment of tanks of the same categories.

It has been successfully developed by the Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment, a unit of the DRDO, in collaboration with Larsen & Toubro Precision Engineering and Systems.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh complimented the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation), the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force and L&T on the successful high altitude trials of the light tank.

"The airlift capability of ILT was also demonstrated by the Indian Air Force. Such a capability would assist in quick deployment of ILT in operating conditions which are remote and difficult to access through road or rail," the ministry said in a statement.

The tank was designed around three years back and its overall development phase has progressed very rapidly, officials said.

"With these two phases of internal performance trials, which were actively supported by the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force, ILT would be undergoing some more trials before being offered for User trials," the ministry said.

Secretary, Department of Defence R&D, and Chairman DRDO Samir V Kamat congratulated the entire light tank team including industry partner L&T for their efforts.

Video: When PM Modi Said "Cut" During Meeting With Kapoors

PM Modi met with the Kapoor family in New Delhi on Tuesday, December 10, to celebrate Raj Kapoor's cinematic legacy on the occasion of his centenary.

Some special moments from this meeting have been released by PMO. In the video PM Modi can be seen talking to Kapoor family about Raj Kapoor and his immense contribution to Indian cinema.

However, the most hilarious moment of the meeting came when PM Modi humorously said 'Cut!' as Reema Jain( Raj Kapoor's daughter) started speaking to him.

It all began when Reema Jain started her conversation with PM Modi and appeared to struggle with her words while addressing him. As she tried to phrase her sentence, starting with 'Aadarniye Pradhan Mantri Narendra Modi Ji,' PM Modi instantly interjected with 'Cut!' leaving everyone in splits.

The Prime Minister also asked the Kapoor family to make a movie, especially catering to Central Asia, about Raj Kapoor who is still in people's mind after so many years. He added that we must put in efforts to make it reach to the new generations in Central Asia and urged the family to create a movie which would act as a link.

Acknowledging the love and fame received from across the globe, Ms. Reema Kapoor said that Shri Raj Kapoor can be called as 'Cultural Ambassador' and she lauded the Prime Minister for being the 'Global Ambassador' of India and the entire Kapoor family was proud of the Prime Minister.

Shri Modi emphasized that the prestige of the country had risen to great heights today and cited Yoga as an example which is discussed across the globe. He further added that he discussed Yoga and its importance with the leaders of other nations during their meet.

Nitin Gadkari On How Road Projects Can Solve Delhi's Garbage Problem

Union minister Nitin Gadkari, who has been handling the Road Transport portfolio for the third straight term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, today said efforts are on to use garbage to build roads, which will also take care of the mounting garbage problems of the country's metro cities.

"Delhi has four mountains of municipal garbage. Now, we have used 80 lakh tons of municipal garbage in road construction," he told NDTV at the special Auto Conclave.

Giving cases in point, he named a number of highways in western and northern India -- the Mumbai-Delhi Express highway, Ahmedabad-Vadodara highway, the Ahmedabad Dholera highway and also in roads in parts of Chandigarh, he added.

The project to convert stubble into biofuel is also going ahead full steam, he said. This will also take care of the massive pollution issue, especially the haze that chokes north India every winter.

"We have 400 projects in the process for which 60 have already started and they are making bio-CNG from parali," he told NDTV.

"And in Panipat, there is a project of IndianOil where they are making 1 lakh litres of bio-ethanol from rice stalks or parali, 150 tonnes of bio vitamins and 78,000 tons per year of aviation fuel," he said, underscoring that it is a classic case of "waste to wealth" generation.

This, he said, would also reduce reduce import bill and pollution and establishes an economic point of view of being "atmanirbhar" (self reliant).

The burning of parali, the minister said, has gone down by 40 per cent and will be down to zero per cent in the next two to three years.

This, he added, will be because of two "important philosophies" he said -- citing generation of wealth from waste as well as knowledge. "innovation, technology... are being used to convert knowledge into wealth," he added.

Haj Quota Of India Fixed By Saudi Arabia At 1,75,025 Pilgrims: Government

The Haj quota of India for 2025 is fixed by Saudi Arabia at 1,75,025 pilgrims and has been distributed between the Haj Committee of India (HCoI) and Haj Group Organisers (HGO), the government informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

In a written reply to a question in the Upper House of Parliament, Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that for the year 2025, the quota has been distributed within the same range between HCoI and HGOs, in the ratio of 70:30, which has been communicated vide the Haj Policy-2025 issued on August 5, 2024.

For Haj 2025, the quota of Haj pilgrims allotted to HGOs is 30 per cent of India's total of 1,75,025, i.e. 52,507, he said.

The allotment of Haj quota and Haj Group Organisers related terms and conditions are governed by a bilateral agreement which is signed between India and Saudi Arabia factoring many ground realities into account, Rijiju said.

The Haj quota of India for 2025 is fixed by Saudi Arabia at 1,75,025 pilgrims and has been distributed between the Haj Committee of India (HCoI) and HGOs, he said.

In the last five years, the quota distribution between HCoI and HGOs has varied between 70:30 and 80:20, the minister said.

Hence, the distribution of quota between HCoI and HGOs for Haj-2025 does not depart from the available precedence, he added.

"Viksit Bharat No Longer A Dream, But A Target", Says Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Sunday said that "Viksit Bharat" is no longer a dream, but a target that has to be achieved with the collective efforts of the citizens, keeping the message of the Bhagavad Gita in mind.

He also warned people about forces that want to hurt India.

"We have chosen the path of Viksit Bharat in 2047. Viksit Bharat is no longer a dream, but a target before us. To achieve it, we will have to keep the message of the Gita in mind.... Like Arjuna was focused on his target, we will have to have the same vision, the same determination, the same concentration," Mr Dhankhar said.

Addressing an event here during the ongoing International Gita festival, the vice president said he has no doubt in his mind that the target of a developed India will be achieved with the collective efforts of the people of the country by 2047 or even before that.

"The role of 'sathi' and 'sarathi' is critical. India has witnessed this over the last 10 years -- unprecedented economic progress, the creation of incredible institutional frameworks and an unparalleled status and respect at the global level, which was once unimaginable," Mr Dhankhar said He added that India's voice resonates strongly today.

The vice president emphasised the need for a "Panchamrit" model of governance inspired by the teachings of the Gita.

"I deeply reflected on what message I could deliver from this sacred place that every citizen can adopt without relying on others. I propose five fundamental principles from the Gita, which I call the Panchamrit of governance, that every citizen can implement with a strong resolve," he said.

Elaborating on one of the five principles -- constructive dialogue -- Mr Dhankhar said, "The dialogue between Krishna and Arjuna teaches us that differences of opinion should not become disputes." "Differences are natural because people think differently. Even our Constituent Assembly faced differences, but it resolved those through debate and discussion. This is a significant message and I expect our members of Parliament, members of legislative assemblies, local representatives of panchayats and municipalities, and all institutions to focus on constructive dialogue.

"The outcome of dialogue should serve social and national interests, not personal interests. No interest is bigger than national interest," he added.

Mr Dhankhar said the second principle is personal integrity.

"Those in positions of responsibility, whether in administration, politics or economics, must lead by example. Their conduct should inspire the public as it has a profound impact on the society," he said.

"The third principle is selfless dedication. Lord Krishna teaches 'Yagyarthat Karmano' -- work should not be for personal gain but for the greater good. With this spirit, I appeal to everyone that building a developed India by 2047 is a grand yagna. Everyone must contribute to this collective effort to the best of their ability for the nation's welfare," he added.

The vice president said the fourth principle is compassion, which is the "essence of our 5,000-year-old culture".

"The fifth principle is mutual respect.... Think about the immense diversity we have, yet it all converges into unity. This idea can be integrated into governance under the Panchamrit framework," he said.

Mr Dhankhar talked about the rapid progress India has made in the last few years and expressed hope that the country, which is currently the world's fifth-largest economy, would soon leave Germany and Japan behind.

He cautioned people, saying there are some forces in the country and abroad, which on the basis of money power and by using mechanisms, want to hurt India, its economy and make its institutions dysfunctional.

"Their sinister design, pernicious object is to taint, tarnish and diminish our constitutional institutions, to run down our growth trajectory. Such forces cannot be ignored now.

"Our culture says that there are occasions when such forces have to be crushed, they have to be crushed.... And we understand all this from the Gita," he said.

"I want to give a message from this land that the nation is supreme for us. There is nothing to be measured in this love for the nation, it will be pure, it will be 100 per cent. We will always keep the nation first," he said.

"We have to remember, we are Indians, Indianness is our identity and we are citizens of such a great country that there is no other country like this in the world, so will we allow our Mother India to be hurt?" Mr Dhankhar asked the gathering.

Referring to the Centre's free ration scheme, Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) that covers 80 crore poor people, the vice president, without naming anyone, said it is "perverse" thinking that this means the government has accepted that 80 crore people in the country are poor.

"Some people are a recipe for chaos, they can only be critics, they cannot think in a positive way. My message to them is that they should understand the essence of the Gita, the message of the Gita," he said.

The PMGKAY was launched in April 2020 to help the poor amid the COVID-19 pandemic for three months but extended later. Under the scheme, poor families get five kg of foodgrains each month for free.

Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Gita Manishi Swami Gyananand were present on the occasion, among others.

Is The 'Writing On The Wall' For Syria's Bashar al-Assad?

More than 13 years since Bashar al-Assad's security forces opened fire on protesters demanding democratic reforms, the Syrian president's grip on power may finally be weakening.

The 59-year-old son and heir of late dictator Hafez al-Assad has faced several setbacks during the long civil war triggered by his brutal crackdown in March 2011, but has so far managed to cling on to power.

Now, with his Lebanese ally Hezbollah reeling from an Israeli onslaught and his great power backer Russia distracted by its invasion of Ukraine, Assad is running short of friends on the battlefield.

Key cities in the north, including Aleppo and Hama have fallen to opposition fighters in just a matter of days.

And on Saturday the rebels said they are now encircling the capital where Assad has ruled since the death of his father in 2000.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has welcomed the rebel advance; Israel is reinforcing its forces in the occupied Golan; and Syria's southern neighbour Jordan is organising an evacuation of its citizens.

In a further sign of Assad's isolation, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) group, which controls much of northeast Syria, said it was ready to speak to its foes among the Turkish-backed rebels.

But international observers have repeatedly predicted the isolated former ophthalmologist's fall since the earliest months of the uprising, and they have repeatedly been incorrect.

The 2011 protests against Assad's rule began after a teenager was arrested for allegedly scrawling anti-government graffiti in the southern town of Daraa.

Stunning advance

Now, for Assad's rule, the "writing is on the wall", Joshua Landis, of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma told AFP. "Things are folding very quickly."

The rebel advance has been stunning.

After Aleppo and Hama fell in quick succession, the rebels and government forces were clashing Saturday near the major city of Homs.

Its capture would effectively cut Assad's capital off from his support base in the Alawite minority community in the coastal highlands.

"The Alawite minority has lost faith in Assad," Landis said. "There are serious questions about whether the Syrian army has any fight left."

But some caution is merited. After all, haven't world leaders underestimated Assad before?

As early as November 2011, Turkey's Erdogan urged Assad to hold free elections and warned that his "office is only temporary".

In October 2012, during a re-election campaign debate, US president Barack Obama also warned Assad that his "days are numbered".

The next month, Nabil Elaraby, then the head of the Arab League, declared "everyone knows that the regime in Syria will not remain for long".

The Syrian strongman defied them all, even as international lawyers drew up arrest warrants for war crimes and rights groups denounced Syria's use of chemical weapons and aerial bombardment in civilian areas.

As the civil war spiralled into overlapping regional conflicts -- government versus rebels, Turkey versus Kurdish fighters, US-backed militias against Islamic State group jihadists -- Assad retained his grip.

At first he was ostracised by many fellow Arab leaders, leaning instead on Iranian and Russian support, but as it became clear he was not leaving the stage diplomatic ties quietly resumed.

Rebel victories

And meanwhile, Russia and Iran had Assad's back. Lebanon's pro-Iran Hezbollah sent thousands of fighters, backed by Iranian advisers, to bolster Syrian government forces. Russia carried out air strikes.

But the speed of this week's rebel victories seems to suggest that without his powerful foreign friends, Assad's Syrian army is a hollow shell.

Russia has such little confidence in its ally that its embassy has acknowledged a "difficult military and political situation".

Before the recent ceasefire in its conflict with Israel, Hezbollah lost thousands of fighters and weapons and its long-standing chief Hassan Nasrallah.

It appears to be in no position to help, despite a Hezbollah source saying Saturday it had sent 2,000 fighters into Syria's Qusayr area "to defend its positions".

"The Assad government is in its most precarious position since the summer of 2012," Nick Heras, an analyst at the New Lines Institute, told AFP.

"There is a real risk that the Assad government could lose power in Damascus, either through battles or through a negotiated retreat.

"Ultimately, the Assad government's ability to survive will depend on the extent to which Iran and Russia see Assad as useful to their strategies in the region."

Heras said that Russia, which has a naval base in the Syrian port of Tartus, would be loath to withdraw its military personnel and assets from the country, and Iran would be similarly reluctant to abandon Assad.

"If either or both of those allies decide they can advance their interests without Assad, then his days in power are numbered," Heras said.

The winners would be Assad's main regional opponents: Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Turkey's Erdogan, who both faced periods of intense domestic criticism only to emerge victorious in war.

Turkey-backed rebels are now spearheading the opposition advance on Homs, and Israeli air strikes against Hezbollah and Iranian targets in Syria have effectively neutralised Assad's most potent backer.

Doctors Treat Accident Victims Under Cell Phone Light At UP Health Centre

Doctors at a community health centre in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur Dehat provided treatment to victims of a road accident under the flashlight of their mobile phones during a power cut on Thursday, despite the availability of two large generators at the facility.

Viral videos from Sikandra Community Health Centre show the doctors attending to patients as the medical staff hold mobile phones to provide light, after the power went off.

Sources said the facility had two functional generators but the systems were not put to use, leading the doctors to continue treating people under inadequate lighting conditions.

The patients were victims of a horrific road accident in Sikandra, which killed two labourers and left 13 people injured, the sources added.

Kanpur Dehat Chief Medical Officer Arun Kumar Singh said a probe has been launched into why the generators and inverter systems were not put to use.

"The community health centre has two generators and an inverter system in the emergency, labour and OPD (out patient department) rooms. I spoke to a doctor there. He claimed the inverter had stopped working for a brief period and was later fixed... There are all (power back up) facilities there...," he said.

Mr Singh also said the power lines in Sikandra are undergoing repair work, due to which the electricity supply is likely to be disrupted every few hours.

Telangana government on Wednesday said it has entered into a strategically-crucial and broad ranging partnership with Google under which the latter is committed to establishing India's first Google Safety Engineering Centre (GSEC) here.
GSEC in Hyderabad would be the second-of-its-kind in the Asia-PAcific region, after Tokyo, and only the fifth in the world, with similar facilities in Dublin, Munich and Malaga.

This GSEC is a specialized international cybersecurity hub that will play a vital role in developing advanced security and online safety products for the Indian context, a press release from the state government said.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Industries and IT minister D. Sridhar Babu held crucial meetings to convince Google leadership on their visit to the IT giant's global headquarters in August 2024.

"We are very proud that Google has chosen Hyderabad for setting up the GSEC. This partnership is a testament to Hyderabad's standing as a leading IT and innovation hub in the country, and world," Revanth Reddy said after the partnership was inked.

Telangana has always been at the forefront of digital skill development and Hyderabad which is already home to five of the most valuable tech companies in the world-Alphabet (Google), Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, and Meta (Facebook) has been the epicenter of IT / ITES development globally, he further said.

Royal Hansen, Vice President, Engineering, Google - Privacy, Safety, Security said, "We are super excited that Google is establishing the GSEC in Hyderabad, a city that is wonderfully positioned to become the global capital and hub for safety engineering, including cyber and digital security. Hyderabad, with this partnership, can become a global centre for this huge area and cater to needs of the world in security." The common alignment of vision of excellence between Google and CM Revanth Reddy to make Hyderabad a global centre promises scope for more partnerships ahead, he further said. Google may also explore an agreement to partner with the Telangana government to set up India's first Google-powered Intelligent Traffic Management System, among other initiatives, the release added.
