All About Baloch Liberation Army Rebels Behind Train Hijacking In Pakistan

Separatist militant group the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed that they had taken hostages during an attack on a train carrying hundreds of people, including paramilitary troops, in southwestern Pakistan on Tuesday and threatened to kill them.

The BLA is the strongest of a number of insurgent groups long operating in the area bordering Afghanistan and Iran, a mineral-rich region that is home to Beijing's investment in Gwadar deep water port and other projects.

In what was previously a low-level insurgency, the militants have in recent months stepped up their activities using new tactics to inflict high death and injury tolls and target Pakistan's military.

Here are facts about the group, which has also targeted Chinese interests.

WHAT ARE THE BLA'S GOALS?

The BLA seeks independence for Balochistan, a province located in Pakistan's southwest and bordering Afghanistan to the north and Iran to the west.

It is the biggest of several ethnic insurgent groups that have battled the federal government for decades, saying it unfairly exploits Balochistan's rich gas and mineral resources.

The insurgents have been fighting to lay a claim to local resources which they say belong to their people.

Balochistan's mountainous border region serves as a safe haven and training ground for the Baloch insurgents and Islamist militants.

HOW HAS IT BECOME MORE LETHAL?

The BLA shocked the country's security establishment when it barged into army and navy bases in 2022.

It has deployed women suicide bombers, including in an attack on Chinese nationals at a university in Karachi and a bombing in southwest Balochistan.

An umbrella group of several Baloch ethnic groups said last week that it had convened all factions in a bid to unite them under a unified military structure.

A dormant BLA splinter group called BLA (AZAD) became active in recent weeks.

WHAT ARE THE BLA'S TARGETS?

The BLA often targets infrastructure and security forces in Balochistan, but has also truck in other areas - most notably the southern port city of Karachi.

The insurgents target Pakistan's army and Chinese interests, in particular the strategic port of Gwadar on the Arabian Sea, accusing Beijing of helping Islamabad to exploit the province.

Militants have killed Chinese citizens working in the region and attacked Beijing's consulate in Karachi.

The BLA, separately, was also at the centre of tit-for-tat strikes last year between Iran and Pakistan over what they called militant bases on each other's territory, which brought the neighbours close to war.

BALOCHISTAN'S SIGNIFICANCE

Balochistan is an important part of China's $65 billion investment in the China Pakistan Economic Corridor, a wing of President Xi Jinping's Belt and Road initiative.

It is home to key mining projects, including Reko Diq, run by mining giant Barrick Gold (ABX.TO), and believed to be one of the world's largest gold and copper mines.

China also operates a gold and copper mine in the province.

The decades-old insurgency has continued to keep the province of some 15 million people unstable and created security concerns around Pakistan's plans to access untapped resources.

It is Pakistan's largest province by area, but smallest by population. Balochistan also has a long Arabian Sea coastline, not far from the Gulf's Strait of Hormuz oil shipping lane.

Hundreds of Baloch activists, many of them women, have protested in Islamabad and Balochistan over alleged abuses by security forces - accusations the government denies.

Islamabad accuses India and Afghanistan of backing the militants to damage Pakistan's relations with China, a charge both countries deny.

Devendra Fadnavis Backs Call To Remove Aurangzeb's Tomb, Slams Congress

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today backed the call for the removal of the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb from Khulabad in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. He, however said this has to be done through the law, since the previous Congress government had protected the tomb by handing it over to the Archaeological Society of India or ASI.

"We all also want the same thing, but you need to do it within the framework of the law, because it is a protected site. The site was put under ASI's protection during the Congress regime some years back," the Chief Minister said.

Recently, the BJP's Satara MP Udayanraje Bhosale, a descendant of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, had demanded that the tomb be razed.

"What is the need... send a JCB machine and raze his grave... he was a thief and lootera (robber)," he said.

"Those who visit Aurangzeb's tomb and pay homage may be his future. They should take that tomb to their own homes, but the glorification of Aurangzeb will not be tolerated anymore," he said.

"Strict action" should be taken against those who give "wrong statements about Shahaji Chhatrapati Maharaj, Rajmata Jijau Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj," he added, in what was seen as a dig at Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi, who had recently praised Aurangzeb.

On March 4, BJP leader Navneet Rana also demanded the demolition of Aurangzeb's grave. "I want to request Maharashtra government that the way Aurangabad's name was changed and kept after our God Sambhaji Maharaj, Aurangzeb's grave should also be demolished," the former BJP MP asserted.

Controversy Over Abu Azmi's Remarks

Last week, Abu Azmi was suspended from the Maharashtra legislative assembly till the end of the budget session over his remarks praising Aurangzeb. Calling the Mughal emperor a great administrator, Mr Azmi had said he was depicted wrongly in history.

"Aurangzeb built many temples. I do not consider Aurangzeb a cruel administrator. Also, the battle between Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Aurangzeb was a battle for state administration. That battle was not about Hindus and Muslims anywhere," he added.

He said that during Aurangzeb's time, India's border extended to Afghanistan. "At that time, our GDP was 24 per cent... India was called Sone Ki Chidiya," he claimed.

But his remarks, coming amid strong emotions stirred by the Vicky Kaushal-starrer 'Chhaava' that depicted the torture of Sambhaji Maharaj, had drawn massive criticism. Police cases were filed against him and despite his later withdrawal of the comment, Chief Minister Fadnavis had said he would be "100 per cent put in jail".

The Tomb

Aurangzeb, who died in 1707 at the age of 87, is buried in Khuldabad, 25 kilometers from Aurangabad, where his wife's tomb, 'Bibi ka maqbara" is located.

In his will, Aurangzeb had expressed the wish that he be buried in Khuldabad, where his guru, Sufi saint Syed Zainuddin, is buried. The tomb lies within the complex of Syed Zainuddin. He also left instructions that he be buried in a simple, open-air tomb.

Later, the Nizam of Hyderabad installed a marble grill around the tomb at the request of Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy of India.

French Journalist Quits Broadcaster Over Nazi Massacre Comparison

A prominent French journalist on Sunday announced he was stepping down from his role as an expert analyst for broadcaster RTL after provoking an uproar by comparing French actions during colonial rule in Algeria to a World War II massacre committed by Nazi forces in France.

Jean-Michel Aphatie, a veteran reporter and broadcaster, insisted that while he would not be returning to RTL he wholly stood by his comments made on the radio station in late February equating atrocities committed by France in Algeria with those of Nazi Germany in occupied France.

"I will not return to RTL. It is my decision," the journalist wrote on the X, after he was suspended from air for a week by the radio station.

On February 25 he said on air: "Every year in France, we commemorate what happened in Oradour-sur-Glane -- the massacre of an entire village. But we have committed hundreds of these, in Algeria. Are we aware of this?"

He was referring to the village of Oradour-sur-Glane, where an SS unit returning to the front in Normandy massacred 642 residents on June 10, 1944. Leaving a chilling memorial for future generations, the village was never rebuilt.

Challenged by the anchor over whether "we (the French) behaved like the Nazis", Aphatie replied: "The Nazis behaved like us".

On X, he acknowledged his comments had created a "debate" but said it was of great importance to understand the full story over France's 1830-1962 presence in Algeria, saying he was "horrified" by what he had read in history books.

After being suspended for a week by the channel it means that "if I come back to RTL I validate this and admit to making a mistake. This is a line that cannot be crossed".

His comments had prompted a flurry of complaints to audio-visual regulator Arcom which has opened an investigation.

France's conduct in Algeria during the 1954-1962 war that led to independence and previous decades remain the subject of often painful debate in both countries.

Historians from both sides have over the last years documented numerous violations including arbitrary killings and detention carried out by French forces and the history still burdens French-Algerian relations to this day.

The far-right in France has long defended French policies in those years with Algeria War veteran Jean-Marie Le Pen, who co-founded the National Front (FN) party and died earlier this year, drawing much support from French settlers who had to return after independence.

2 Medical College Interns Assaulted By Batchmates Over Jokes On Instagram In Gujarat: Cops

Two interns of a government medical college and hospital in Gujarat's Bhavnagar were allegedly detained and assaulted by some of their batchmates and a senior over jokes shared by them on Instagram, police said Saturday.

In two separate complaints, the interns, Ishan Kotak and Aman Joshi, said the accused were also unhappy over their handling of convocation and sports activities in the medical college.

Both alleged incidents took place on Friday. The interns said they were detained, assaulted and issued death threats by their batchmates and a senior, according to the FIR.

Joshi alleged that his batchmates came to his hostel room late in the night and took him to another room where the accused persons slapped him several times, abused and threatened to kill him.

The complainant said the accused were unhappy because of certain decisions taken by him for the sports activities of the college.

In his complaint, Kotak said he was asked to come out of his hostel room and meet the accused near the hostel. When he went there, he and his friend accompanying him were bundled into a vehicle, taken around and assaulted.

Kotak said the accused were upset because of the jokes he had posted on an Instagram page created by them which was meant for "innocent" humour.

Two first information reports (FIRs) have been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for wrongful confinement, intentionally causing hurt, intentionally insulting someone to provoke a breach of peace, and using obscene acts and language in public a place.

Police said an investigation was underway and the accused were yet to be arrested.

Manipur's Meitei And Thadou Tribe Organisations Make A Peace Breakthrough

Two influential civil society organisations of Manipur's Meitei community and the indigenous distinct tribe Thadou in a joint press conference today called for working toward bringing peace in Manipur.

Members of the Meitei Alliance and the Thadou Inpi Manipur called the joint announcement in Delhi today a "significant and historic moment" as they met for the first time on a common platform and for a common goal since the outbreak of ethnic violence in May 2023.

The Meitei Alliance, an umbrella body of Meitei civil society organisations globally, and the Thadou Inpi Manipur, which says it is the apex body of the Thadou tribe in the state, in a joint statement gave a six-point agreement that they said could work as the foundation on which successive small steps can be taken to restore peace and rebuild lives in the state bordering Myanmar.

"From the perspective of the Thadou right from day one it is very clear that we want peace... Unless and until you identify who are Kukis in Manipur, there won't be any solution," Thadou Inpi Manipur General Secretary T Michael Lamjathang Haokip told reporters.

"First, identify who are Kukis. You must have come across many hyphenated Kuki dash Zo not accepted by Zomi Council, Kuki dash Zo not accepted by Hmar... these types of things have been going on... so who exactly are Kukis and who are these people who are causing violence? Until and unless you don't define these people, it is like a timebomb. Another eruption will happen anytime again in the name of Kuki," Mr Haokip said.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Meitei Alliance founding member Dr Malem Ningthouja said if there are people who don't want peace and co-existence in Manipur, there are also people "who are crying for peace, crying for addressing the grievances of people affected by the disturbance in Manipur".

"As we looked for durable solutions, we came across various forces and among them we came in touch with Thadoi Inpi Manipur. We believe that they have genuine grievances vis a vis supremacists and sectarian forces... Meitei Alliance having full faith in addressing specific democratic concerns of coexisting communities and in the collective identity of Manipur, we should also acknowledge their aspirations and concerns while calling for peace. This is how we came together," Dr Ningthouja said.

Diverse Communities

In the joint statement, the two organisations said the meeting reaffirmed the exigency of taking up initiatives towards promoting the peaceful and harmonious relationship and understanding among diverse communities that shape the cultural fabric of Manipur.

In the first point, the joint statement sought the preservation and promotion of Manipur as a cohesive and harmonious multi-ethnic society with a sense of unity, integrity, peace, respect and safety among all members of the society.

The joint statement asked for delisting of "vague or fake nomenclature such as 'Any Kuki tribes'" from the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list of Manipur, and demanded recognition of the original inhabitants of Manipur, including all its original communities, and updating of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The last two points are: "acknowledgement of the bold leadership and aspiration of Thadou Inpi Manipur to preserve and promote Thadou identity as independent and distinct from Kuki. Joint initiatives and collective efforts to overcome community identity misidentification and misinterpretation."

'Milestone Achievement'

The Thadou Inpi Manipur says Thadou is a distinct tribe with their own distinct identity, language and culture, and is not part of the Kuki umbrella. The Thadou Inpi Manipur is also seeking the removal of 'Any Kuki Tribes' from the ST category, which was inserted in 2003 with a recommendation to the Centre by the then Congress government in Manipur.

"It is a milestone achievement for the Thadou people because right from the beginning we have been hoping others would understand us. We hope this collaboration with the Meitei Alliance would be well-received by the people of Manipur. We also hope people on the ground understand who Kuki and Thadou are. Meitei and Thadou have no conflict. It was about mistaken identity," Mr Haokip told NDTV.

Recent Developments

Another civil society organisation of the Meitei community and the Thadou Students Association (GHQ) extended support to the Centre's recent decisions on bringing peace in the violence-hit state. The Thadou Students' Association (GHQ) termed the Centre's order to ensure free movement of people on all roads in Manipur from Saturday "a light at the end of the tunnel."

The Delhi Meitei Forum (DMF), an independent civil society group of the Meitei community living in the national capital, in a statement said it "extends heartfelt gratitude to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his commitment to restoring peace and normalcy in Manipur", especially the order to ensure unrestricted travel across Manipur's roads from March 8, ensuring safety and accessibility for all.

Threat By Kuki Militant Group UKNA

Hours before the event began in Delhi on Friday, the militant group United Kuki National Army (UKNA) issued a threat to the Meitei Alliance and the Thadou Inpi Manipur to cancel it. The UKNA is not a signatory to the suspension of operations (SoO) agreement.

In separate statements, the two civil society groups and many others who supported the joint peace initiative condemned the UNKA and requested the government to take action against the UKNA, which already faces a terror case being handled by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

"The press conference, scheduled for March 7, 2025, at Vishwa Yuwa Kendra, New Delhi, is a collaborative effort to foster mutual respect and peaceful dialogue between our communities. Any attempt to silence these efforts through death threats or intimidation is unacceptable and highly condemnable," the global body Thadou Community International (TCI) said in a statement.

The Meitei Heritage Society, the Thadou Students' Association (GHQ), Meitei Alliance, Thadou Inpi Manipur, and others in separate statements pushed back against the UKNA threat and resolved to hold the joint press conference.

"We are shocked to see the objection from a few Chin Kuki CSO/student body. What is more disturbing is that UKNA, a Chin Kuki militant... has threatened us to withdraw the peace initiative or face dire consequences. We condemn this threat. It only reinforces what we have been saying from the start, that it is Kuki militant groups that don't want peace in Manipur in order to continue ruling over the common people with guns," the Meitei Heritage Society said in a statement.

Kuki Organisations Object To Meeting

The Kuki Students' Organisation (Delhi and NCR) alleged the meeting lacked legitimacy to "unilaterally determine the future of the Kuki people under the pretense of restoration of peace in Manipur."

"Thadou Inpi Manipur, a fringe organisation that persistently foments division within the Kuki community in general and the Thadou tribe in particular, is a body orchestrated by a select few with vested interests that run counter to the well-being of their own people," the KSO (Delhi and NCR) said in a statement.

It alleged Thadou Inpi Manipur's "blatant act of defection comes at the direct expense of the legitimate mother organisation - Thadou Inpi General Headquarters, Manipur, of which it was once an integral part - and runs counter to the very interests of the community it falsely claims to represent."

The valley-dominant Meitei community and over a dozen distinct tribes collectively known as Kuki, who are dominant in some hill areas of Manipur, have been fighting since May 2023 over a range of issues such as land rights and political representation. Over 250 have died in the violence and nearly 50,000 have been internally displaced.

'Separate Administration Not New Demand'

Meitei leaders have alleged Kuki militant groups that signed the SoO agreement have been working to strengthen themselves over the years by taking advantage of the ceasefire, until a time came to engineer a violent attack for a separate land.

While Kuki-Zo groups pointed at the ethnic clashes that began in May 2023 as the reason why they escalated their demand from an autonomous council to a separate administration, or a Union Territory with an assembly, Meitei leaders have pointed at decades-old evidence of Kuki groups working to form 'Kukiland' carved out of Manipur.

The World Kuki-Zo Intellectual Council (WKZIC) in a memorandum to Manipur's new Governor on January 15 said the Kuki tribes have been demanding a state "since 1946-47."

In the years before May 2023, Kuki protests, gatherings and panel discussions have mentioned the demand for a separate area carved out of Manipur.

"Telangana Student Found Dead With Bullet Wounds In US": Family

A 26-year-old student from Telangana was allegedly found dead with bullet wounds in the US, but the circumstances leading to his death were not clear, his family members said on Wednesday.

G Praveen was pursuing MS in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His family was informed by US authorities on Wednesday morning (Indian time). Some friends said that Praveen's body was found with bullets, his cousin Arun told PTI.

Some say Praveen was shot dead by unknown assailants at a store, but the cause of death was not known to the family, he said.

Arun said Praveen called his father in the early hours of Wednesday, but the latter could not take the call as he was sleeping.

Praveen's parents are in a state of shock after learning about the incident, he said.

The family is native of Ranga Reddy district, neighbouring Hyderabad.

The US authorities informed family members that the cause of death would be known after an autopsy.

Praveen, who studied B Tech in Hyderabad, had gone to the US in 2023 to pursue MS. He visited India in December, 2024 and left for America in January this year.

The family members approached MLAs and other leaders for help.

At least two Indian students from Telangana, one from Khammam in November last year and another from Hyderabad in January this year, were allegedly shot dead in the US.

French Paedophile Surgeon Says He Is Both "Good Surgeon" And "Pervert"

French paedophile surgeon Joel Le Scouarnec said on Tuesday that he had two distinct personalities: as both "a good surgeon", and a "pervert" who had no qualms about what he did to his patients, most of whom were minors.

Le Scouarnec, 74, has been on trial in the western city of Vannes since last week in one of France's largest child sex abuse cases.

The majority of Le Scouarnec's victims were children whom he is believed to have abused while they were waking up from anaesthetic or during post-op checkups, at a dozen hospitals between 1989 and 2014.

"My paedophile activity was one thing and my professional activity was another, and this paedophile activity had no impact on my professional activity," he said in court.

"For some people, it's incomprehensible."

The father of three admitted taking advantage of his position "to abuse children".

Speaking in an even voice, he also recounted that he would look at child pornography during lunch breaks in his office, which might have had "harmful consequences" on his work.

"I am entirely responsible for what I have done," Le Scouarnec said.

On Monday, Scouarnec said that being a paedophile did not prevent him from being a good father.

He admitted that he had "fantasised" about his three sons but insisted he had never acted on those fantasies.

His middle son, 42, told the court last week that he had been raped and sexually abused by his grandfather, Le Scouarnec's father, from the age of five to 10 years old.

Le Scouarnec meticulously documented the sexual assaults, noting his victims' names, ages and addresses and the nature of the abuse.

On Monday, he described his diaries as "sordid" and "vulgar".

The former surgeon "is someone who has moved on, who has put his actions into words, who has a position that has evolved considerably," his lawyer, Thibaut Kurzawa, said on Monday.

The former surgeon is already in jail, having been found guilty in 2020 of abusing four children, including two of his nieces.

Under French law, rape is "any act of sexual penetration, of whatever nature, or any oral-genital act committed on another person or on the person of the perpetrator through violence, coercion, threat or surprise".

The surgeon was never investigated during his career, despite a 2005 sentence for possessing sexually abusive images of children and some of his colleagues sounding the alarm over suspicious behaviour.

He continued to practise until his retirement in 2017, after which a six-year-old accused him of rape and police discovered diary accounts of abuse against his patients stored on his computers.

Russia Permanently Bans Japan's Foreign Minister, 8 Others From Entering Country

Russia has permanently banned nine Japanese citizens from entering the country, according to a list published by the Russian Foreign Ministry on Monday.

The ministry said that the decision was made in response to Japan's sanctions against Russia related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The list includes Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwai, the president and representative director of carmaker Isuzu Shinsuke Minami, and Shohei Hara, senior vice president of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

In late July 2024 Russia took similar measures against another 13 Japanese nationals, including the chairman of another carmaker, Toyota Motor. Tokyo has protested against that decision.

Entry bans for foreigners are a common measure employed by Moscow in retaliation for sanctions or other opposition against Russia's military campaign in Ukraine.

Similar lists exist for several countries, including the US and Canada and include hundreds of people.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) stated in its most recent Enforcement Report that the corporation is recalling the impacted lot because of "CGMP Deviations." The "presence of N-Nitroso Atomoxetine impurity above the FDA recommended limit" is the reason for the recall, it continued.

According to the USFDA, a Class II recall is started when there is a remote chance of substantial adverse health effects or when using or being exposed to a product that violates the law may result in short-term or medically reversible negative health effects.

Odisha Student Allegedly Dies By Suicide Over "Inappropriate Frisking" By Male Teacher

An 18-year-old girl student in Odisha's Kendrapara district died allegedly by suicide after being "frisked inappropriately" by a male teacher before she entered an examination hall, police said on Sunday.

The mother of the student lodged a police complaint on Saturday, alleging that her daughter was "inappropriately frisked by a male teacher" on February 19 when she appeared for the ongoing exams conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), Odisha at Pattamundai College, a senior officer aid.

Instead of female teachers, the girl students were allegedly frisked by men, which was against the CHSE guidelines, Pattamundai Rural Police Station inspector-in-charge Dheeraj Lenka said, quoting the contents of the FIR.

"Upset over the harassment, the class 12 student ended her life on February 24," the complainant said.

"The complaint was lodged yesterday. We have launched an investigation and are verifying the CCTV footage to ascertain what happened. If evidence is found, legal action will be initiated against the accused," Lenka said.

The college authorities, however, denied the allegation.

"Girl students are frisked by female staffers before they are allowed to enter exam halls. The allegation that a male teacher inappropriately frisked a student is not true," Pattamundai College Principal Dilip Kumar Bhuyan said.

Maharashtra Government To Provide Free Cancer Vaccine For Girls Aged 0-14

Maharashtra Health Minister Prakash Abitkar on Saturday announced that the Maharashtra government will provide free cancer vaccines to girls aged 0-14, highlighting growing concerns over rising cancer cases across the state.

"With changes in lifestyle, cancer cases are rising in both rural and urban areas. Previously, cancer was often linked to specific addictions, but now it's being detected across all age groups, including children. This is highly concerning," he said.

To address the issue, the Maharashtra government has decided to implement a free cancer vaccination program.

"We have requested our Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister, Ajit Pawar, to provide free cancer vaccinations to girls aged 0-14. He has agreed to implement this initiative through the Maharashtra government," Abitkar added.

Meanwhile, the state has also taken preventive steps in response to the detection of bird flu in crows in Vidarbha. Abitkar clarified that there is no confirmed case of human infection.

"Regarding the situation in Vidarbha, we are taking precautions due to the detection of avian influenza (bird flu) in crows. There is currently no clear evidence of bird flu in the suspected patient, and we have sent his report to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for further analysis. As a preventive measure, we have temporarily closed chicken shops in the area," he added.

Earlier, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar urged people to avoid consuming undercooked chicken as a precautionary measure amid the ongoing Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) outbreak in Pune. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event marking the 75th anniversary of the Pune Municipal Corporation(PMC), Pawar addressed speculation linking the outbreak to chicken consumption.

Pune Rape Accused, Who Is On The Run, Posed As Cop For Months: Sources

Dattatraya Ramdas Gade, the Pune rape accused who is on the run, posed as a policeman for several months, sources have told NDTV. Rs 1 lakh will be given to the person providing information about his whereabouts, Pune Police Commissioner has announced.

A 26-year-old woman was allegedly raped inside a state transport bus at the Swargate bus station, which is one of the largest bus depots of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), in Pune on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old accused, a resident of Gunat village in Pune, is named in half a dozen cases of theft, robbery and chain-snatching in Pune and Ahilyanagar district. He has been out on bail since 2019 in one of the offences.

Sources say the Swargate bus stop was the accused's usual haunt. He was, say sources, often spotted around there in a shirt, sports shoes and a mask. He would tell people around the bus stand that he was a policeman, the sources added.

According to the survivor, she was waiting for a bus for Phaltan in Satara district at one of the platforms around 5.45 am on Tuesday, when the accused engaged her in conversation, calling her 'didi' (sister), and said the bus for Satara had arrived at another platform.

He took her to an empty 'Shiv Shahi' AC bus parked elsewhere on the premises. As the lights inside the bus were not on, she hesitated to get in but the man convinced her that it was the right vehicle. The accused then followed her and raped her, the woman, who works in the medical field, told the police.

According to residents of Gunat village, the accused is married and has children. He also has a brother and his parents are farm labourers, say villagers.

Earlier today, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik ordered a security audit of all bus stations and depots of the State Road Transport Corporation.

The minister has also directed authorities to deploy women security guards, an MSRTC release said. He also asked police to increase patrolling at depots and bus stations, adding that depot managers must stay at the facility to keep an eye on happenings.

The MSRTC issued an internal circular asking staffers to wear proper uniforms with nameplate for identification.

CCTV cameras will be made mandatory along with GPS and panic buttons in around 15,000 MSRTC buses, including those hired from private contractors, Mr Sarnaik said.

Ashwini Vaishnaw Questions Rahul Gandhi's Stance On 3-Language Policy In Tamil Nadu

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday questioned Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi over his stance on the Tamil Nadu government's resistance towards the three-language policy in the state.

Mr Vaishnaw in a post on X, responded to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin's post wherein he said that the push for a "monolithic Hindi identity" is what 'killed' the "ancient mother tongues."

"Poor governance will never be hidden by such shallow attempts to divide society. It will be interesting to know what the Leader of the Opposition,@RahulGandhiJi, has to say on this subject. Does he, as MP of a Hindi-speaking seat, agree?" posted Mr Vaishnaw on X.

This comes after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin's post on X on the three-language policy.

"My dear sisters and brothers from other states, Ever wondered how many Indian languages Hindi has swallowed? Bhojpuri, Maithili, Awadhi, Braj, Bundeli, Garhwali, Kumaoni, Magahi, Marwari, Malvi, Chhattisgarhi, Santhali, Angika, Ho, Kharia, Khortha, Kurmali, Kurukh, Mundari and many more are now gasping for survival," MK Stalin's post read.

"The push for a monolithic Hindi identity is what kills ancient mother tongues. UP and Bihar were never just 'Hindi heartlands.' Their real languages are now relics of the past. Tamil Nadu resists because we know where this ends," read the post from Stalin.

Tamil organisations and state parties have accused the central government of trying to impose Hindi on Tamil Nadu, though the Union government has maintained that it respects the Tamil language and is not forcing any other language on the state.

Earlier on February 26, Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a scathing attack on the ruling DMK government in Tamil Nadu, accusing its leaders of corruption and misgovernance.

Speaking at the inauguration of BJP district offices in Coimbatore, Tiruvannamalai, and Ramanathapuram, Shah said, "In cases of corruption, all the leaders of the DMK hold a master's degree. One of their leaders is embroiled in a cash-for-jobs case, another is involved in money laundering and illegal sand mining, and a third is facing charges related to disproportionate assets."

Rejecting CM MK Stalin's allegations that Tamil Nadu was denied central funds, Shah said, "There is no truth in MK Stalin's statement. The Modi government has given Rs 5 lakh crore to Tamil Nadu in the last five years."

Mocking the DMK, Shah said that those involved in corruption should join the membership drive of MK Stalin's party.

The DMK has been vocal about protecting the Tamil language and resisting any efforts to make Hindi 'more dominant', arguing that it would undermine Tamil culture and identity.

The DMK has raised significant concerns over its implications on education in Tamil Nadu, accusing the central government of using the policy to "impose religious ideas on the education system."
